Blog Day

Today is Blog Day and the challenge is to find 5 new blogs that interest you.

Here are the ones I've found tonight:

Erwin House--also in Austin, blogging about renovating their home. Very cool decor. I'd love to see it in person.

Fussy--The most recent entry caught my eye because she just had to put her dog down because she had cancer. See Kristin's blog for an entry about Gus. She's being optomistic, while I'm taking the pessimistic route. Then I realized that I had read the story about Fussy's hair. Subscribing to this one.

Just Me Copper--blogging from a Dachshund's point of view. I think Copper and Lulu would have a good time together.

Alright, I admit, I haven't found 5 new blogs tonight and my bed is calling to me.

Thought of the day

it's early, I'm sure I'll have more than one thought today

How do they do it? How do all these creative busy women have time to craft and blog? In theory, I should have plenty of free time but I don't. Ya'll don't watch tv do you? That's where all my free time seems to go.

Grilled cookies

I must report that the grilled cookies did not happen tonight. Because it was trying to rain, I did not feel like standing out by the grill with my digital camera. Instead, I baked the cookies the normal way.

Big Ass

I have this thing where I like to know what people are going to order when we're out to eat or where they went for lunch. So when I asked a coworker where he went for lunch today and what he had, he told me he had a big ass salad and it got me to thinking.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a restaurant and everything on the menu would be a Big Ass whatever.

Big Ass salad

Big Ass hamburger

Big Ass Chicken fried steak

Okay, maybe it was only amusing as I was eating my Lean Cuisine in the breakroom.

More cookies

You've probably heard of grilling pizza, but have you ever heard of grilling cookies?

I still have some of the cookie dough and it's still so hot here in Austin so I thought "why not?" The hardest part will be getting the grill to the correct temperature but, unlike my car, there is a temperature gauge.

Tonight will be the night. Last night was all about the Closer and trying to sort out the craft room.

Crafty thoughts

I have crafty ideas. Sometimes they keep me up at night or hit me when I’m driving. Reading so many creative blogs has really got my inner artist to thinking. Besides finishing my quilt and making the bag for the Sew? I knit! challenges—and yes, I know I’m waaaay overdue on the bag, and the Boss scarf, I have a scarf design that came to mind while driving back from Houston 2 weeks ago. The pattern is messily jotted down in the notebook I’ve taken to carrying around with me at the office and the car so I can jot down my creative thoughts. Yesterday, I started thinking about designing my own quilt pattern. Before I cut any fabric though, I think I’ll sketch it out first.
Besides all those crafty ideas, I also have ideas for my house.

First I need to re-paint the kitchen. Yellow is my least favorite color and I painted it in my kitchen anyway. Why? Because it looks good with the cabinets, countertop and my wall d├ęcor. It still looks good but I really can’t stand it. The new color has been chosen, it’s just a matter of buying the paint and doing it. Or having it done. I detest painting so will be paying my friend to do it. He is odd and enjoys the painting process.

The bedroom also needs painting and a headboard needs to be purchased. I think I found the one I want but, of course, I have to think it over for freaking ever. Heaven forbid I make a decision I regret.

In the living room, there is wall paper to be removed before painting. The room also needs better lighting and I’m a bit stumped about that solution. Perhaps I shouldn’t have slept through most of my lighting design class.

Don’t even get me started on the court yard and back yard. I have grand mental plans for those areas. It all boils down to money, time and energy, two of which I haven’t got. You guess which.

The experiment

A couple of weeks ago I read a story about a woman who decided to bake cookies in her car because it was so hot. That sounds way better than frying an egg on the sidewalk so I decided that I would give it a try as well.

So this morning I went to grocery store and bought a package of pre-made cookies. Place and bake the package said. The instructions were to pre-heat your oven to 350° and then bake for 14-20 minutes.

The current temperature, when I started this experiment around 1pm, was 95° but feeling like 100°. This is according to the weather channel. The high for today is supposed to be 102°.

I parked the car out on the street and left it there to heat up for about 30 minutes. According to the woman in the story, it takes about 4 hours to bake the cookies.

Baking begins

After about an hour I went outside to check on the cookies. Things seem to be doing fine. The cookies are spreading and cooking. I bet they smell great.

Baking time 1 hour

It’s a cloudy day and doesn’t really feel all that hot so I don’t know how well they’ll turn out. At the 2nd hour check the cookies are crisp and cooked on the outside but still very soft to the touch. And they smell terrific.

Baking time 2 hours

By the fourth hour, I am hungry for some cookies so I brought them inside. Upon eating one, and then another just to make sure, they aren’t quite done.

After 4 hours

They’re finishing in the oven now. I think that I will try this again but on a less cloudy day and in my office parking lot. The lot is much darker than my street and it always seems so much hotter because there is nothing around.

But really, who cares how they were baked, they're still yummy cookies!

Teaser

I'm baking cookies. You'll want to check back tonight for the results.

Lulu gets excited when I announce it's time for bed. She really hates it when I stop off to check blogs though. Tonight, she decided she just could not wait for me to turn back the covers for her. Instead, she burrowed her way in. She's the lump under the pink pillow.

Snack time

Looky what I found on the shelves at Target last night. My favorite part of the Gardetto's snack mix! All in their own little bag. So bad for my diet but oh so tasty.

Lulu likes them too.

Thoughts on the day

I am tired.

I nearly blinded myself trying to water the lawn tonight and I swear I heard Lulu laughing.

I do not want to drive to Houston tomorrow morning.

I am happy someone got fired today.

I am also ashamed that I am happy.

I finally put my new computer desk in place and my chair is too short.

My love for Storm is Large

If you have been watching Rockstar: SuperNova, then you probably think my title is totally goofy. But have you heard Storm Large sing? The woman can rock. And she's hot as eggs on a Texas sidewalk in August. Seriously, if I liked chicks like that, I would want her. No, wait. I want to _be_ her. She's tall, strong, hot, has an amazing voice and a kick ass attitude.

Ryan Star, who always makes me think of the American Idol Ryan Starr, was also totally rockin' tonight. He sang his own song and I loved the arrangement.

Toby took his shirt off and that was enough for me. Who cares what he sings!

Gee's Bend

While I was in Houston, my cousin took me to the museum of fine arts to see a quilt exhibit. The quilts of Gee's Bend were done by a collective of poor cotton farming women in Alabama. Using only the scraps they had on hand, they made (and still make) beautiful quitls. I wish that I could have taken photos but that was not allowed.

So many of the quilts reminded me of Denyse Schmidt's work that I wondered if she'd been influenced by them.

There is a film that is shown that has the women describing how they came up with their designs, what materials they used and so forth. If you are in the Houston area, I highly recommend seeing this show before it leaves.

Daily annoyance

There is a road in Austin named Parmer. Do you see the letter “L” anywhere in that word? No, you do not. You will, however, hear it. So many people in Austin pronounce it as if it were spelled palmer. It’s paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarmer you dumb fuck!

And that is today’s annoyance. Apparently, I am not the only one that feels this way.

The hazards of napping in the craft room

Napping in the craft room

This scrap of fabric has been on the floor for weeks. I used it to test the stitch length/tension on my sewing machine when I pulled it out for the quilt. During that time, Lulu has slept on it frequently. Today I amused myself by covering her up with it, like a little blanket.

The craft room aka "the room of tables" is in chaos right now since I finally got rid of one (out of 3) desk. Currently, I am sitting on the floor typing this with the monitor sitting on the cpu because I haven't bothered to finish organizing.

I'm back....for now

Just got in from Houston a few minutes ago. Much to blog about. Will type up a report soon.

I say I'm only back for now because I will be back in Houston next week for work. Again, I'll be staying with my cousin but she has the world's worst dial-up so blogging will be impossible. Unless I can do it on the sly at work but that remains to be seen.

EK out!

I'm off to Houston until Sunday, so no blogging for a while. So sad, I know. Ya'll behave.

New fabric

This is the new dog print fabric that I bought today. My mom actually found it so I have to give her props.

I'm not sure how well it goes with the other fabric but it could work.

New throw rug
From Crate & Barrel. The colors are terrific.

Bag lust

I tore this ad out of my InStyle magazine that came in the mail yesterday. Never before have I wanted a Dooney & Burke bag but this one is calling out to me. Something about the red suede. I can tell you in good faith that this bag is not in my budget. In fact, it's not even on their web site!

In case you didn't know.....

rotting red bell peppers can smell like marijuana. Also, they start to liquify

Lovely day

Today was the first day of my vacation. This morning I went to the chiropractor/physical therapy/massage therapy doctor and then my regular doctor. My neck got adjusted and my meds were evaluated and all is well.

Then my mom came over this afternoon. We took a chair I'd been meaning to sell to a young woman who is from Egypt and starting grad school at UT. She was really nice so I am hoping to make a new friend. Then mom and I went shopping. I bought another super cute dog print fabric and a throw rug for in front of the sliding doors in the living room.

After we had dinner (Italian....mucho garlic!) she left and took Lulu with her since I am unable to take Lulu with me to my cousin's house. Cousin has an elderly dog that will not do well with a visiting dog.

About 20 minutes after mom left I realized that my cell phone was in her car. Dur! I hate it when things like that happen. Luckily she wasn't half way home yet so turned around to bring it to me. I think I hear her now.

Bath time

We made some new friends today, a guy and his doxie, Slinky. We walked all around the park and the trail was pretty dusty, so Lulu got a bath. She hates having a bath and tries to climb out the entire time.

Trying to avoid a bath

Of course after the bath, shaking is required.

Shake it off

Then hiding from me must happen.

Hiding after the bath

And then the glaring. Can you feel how peev'd she is with me?

Whatchew lookin' at?

Books!

I have always enjoyed reading. When I was in first grade I went to a small private school and we would take field trips to the library. You could not get a library card until you could write your own name and I was so excited to get that card. I’m pretty sure I still have it around here somewhere. One of my favorite things to do is to curl up under the blankets on a cold winter Saturday and to read a good book. My friend Katie posted this meme so I thought I’d share it with ya’ll. I changed a few of the questions because I didn’t have answers for the original ones. Coming up with just one book for these answers was hard enough!

1: One book that changed your life: I can’t say that there is just one, but so many times I have read a book that gave me something to think about.

2: One book you have read more than once: The Borrowers

3: One book you would want on a desert island: Something long with interesting, memorable characters and a laugh out loud, keep you up at night in suspense plot.

4: One book that made you laugh: Marley & Me

5: One book you wish you had never read: The Nanny Diaries. It made me so anxious.

6: One book that made you cry: The Lovely Bones

7: One book you are currently reading: Emma & Me

8: One book you have been meaning to read: The Other Sister

9: One book you recommend to everyone to read: The Time Traveler's Wife(my current favorite and one I plan to re-read)

10: One book you could not make yourself finish: Pride & Prejudice. I wanted to, I really did, but after 4 chapters I could not get into it and there are way too many books and not enough time.

Regular readers, I’d love to hear your answers. And, if for some reason, you feel the need to give me something to read, you can always check out my Amazon.com list. October 1st will be here before you know it!

Blog worth

My blog is worth $1,693.62.
How much is your blog worth?

That's not very much. It's because there's not enough pictures, right?

Another lazy weekend comes to a close

For a weekend in which I pretty much did nothing, I sure have a lot to write about. Saturday afternoon, Lulu and I drove out to the Hill Country to spend the rest of the weekend with my folks. Gramma and Grandpa, as I've taken to calling them, love having Lulu visit. Oh they like having me visit too, but the fact that many people in their church know all about Lulu has to say something.

Saturday evening we drove out to have dinner with another couple they are friends with. Their house was beautiful. Up on a hill, over looking the lake, surrounded by trees. The food was so good. So very good that I wanted to just eat and eat, but I didn't. And of course the conversation was great too. It turns out that the wife of the couple loves reality tv shows and Project Runway is one of her favorites. So it was a lot of fun to discuss that show with some of a whole different generation.

I even went to bed early last night....before 11pm!

This morning we went to church and I found the sermon very interesting, though I couldn't really tell you what it was about now. But I know it was interesting because I stayed awake for the entire thing! Sometimes I think I inherited some kind of sleeping disease from my dad because we both fall asleep in church so easily.

So after all that, it was back to the parents' house for a nap and then Lulu and I drove home.

An uneventful weekend, but nice and relaxing.

Reunions

It's time for your 15th reunion.

That's what I just saw in an email from Classmates.com. It was an email announcement to let me know that my high school 15 year reunion is coming up. Now I have no idea if my class is even having something for this, but even if they were I wouldn't go.

It's not that I hated high school, for the most part it was alright, certainly it was better than junior high, but I just have no desire to go back. I'm barely in touch with anyone I went to high school with and now that my parents no longer live in the town I haven't got much of a reason to visit.

Also, the town and the school have changed so much since I last saw them. I don't want my memories to change by seeing something different.

But whenever I hear the song "Eye of the Tiger" I flash back to the pep rallys and get all nostalgic.

Playful Lulu

Now that Gus is gone, I'm seeing a part of Lulu's personality that I've not seen much of before. She's excited to see me when I get home from work. She hops around and wriggles on her back. It can really perk me up after a tough day at the office.

Lulu really digs her stuffed toys and now we can play with them without getting mauled by Gus trying to join in. I do miss him though as he could really make me laugh.

Baking

Lemon Poppyseed Muffins

It's hotternhell outside, so why did I fire up the oven tonight to bake some muffins? Because I actually had milk and eggs in my fridge and the box of mix was calling my name. However, I must confess, I don't really want to eat any of the muffins. They are lemon poppyseed, but from the little nibble I had they are not to my liking.

8.11.2006

TGIF

Today was the longest day ever. The lack of sleep is finally getting to me. This afternoon I called my coworker "what'syourname" and she has the same name as the other woman in my department. And it's not a hard or unusual name. How jealous was I knowing that Lulu was snoozing the day away in my comfy bed?

8.10.2006

Botox, stat!

Lulu says

It's after 11pm. Do you see those dark circles under my eyes, the lines in my brow? Why am I not in bed getting some much needed beauty sleep? Because I'm an addict. I'm addicted to information and entertainment. It's such an If you give a Mouse a Cookie problem.

You see, first I went to the grocery store (finally! and that's a whole 'nother blog post, let me tell you what) and when I got home it was already 9:30. Thank god for the dvr because I did not want to miss a minute of Project Runway. Then when that was over I had to see who got eliminated on Rockstar:SuperNova. That show is also another blogpost. Fast forward is my friend because by the time I was done with all that, I was just in time to catch the tail end of the weather report on the news. Not that I need to see it because it is August in Texas, which means hot, hot, hot.

And now, here I am, checking my email and trying to read some blogs before I go to bed. You know, it's a good thing this medicine I'm taking to lose weight also has the side affect of me needing less sleep. Normally I need at least 8 hours but I'm doing pretty good on 6.

Enough rambling! Nighty night y'all.

It's now 11:27pm.

8.09.2006

Not your average doxie

The stinky food

This is the food that Lulu didn't eat this morning. That's not normal. A normal dachshund eats food like it is the last meal they'll ever get. Not Lulu. She likes to eat very slowly, sometimes taking out a few pieces of food and dropping them on the carpet. Now that Gus is gone she doesn't have to stand over the bowl eating until it's all gone.

And yes, it still stinks. I'm becoming very good at holding my breath as I dish it out. The smell still makes me gag.

When I grow up

Monkey on her back

A post by Laurie, over at Crazy Aunt Purl about professions she might like to have got me to thinking. What would I like to do if I wasn’t doing my current job?

Some jobs I might like are:

Hair dresser
Professional shopper
Make up artist
Professional organizer
Professional reader (books, magazines, blogs)
Lady Who Lunches
Owner of knitting/quilting/scrapbooking shop in the hill country town my parents live in

It’s interesting to me that several of these jobs could still be considered design. I guess it’s in my blood. Of course the last two jobs are ones I made up, but it could happen if I won the lottery or got visited by a genie or something equally bizarre. Right. Right?

Speaking of shopping, I went on a bit of a fabric bender this weekend. No projects in mind really, just fabrics I adored. I also have a package coming from The Fat Quarter Shop. Those fabrics are for a project I have in mind, but I can’t post about it because it’s a secret. Also, since I am most likely to not actually complete the project I’d rather not disappoint.

New fabrics

Cloud of crazy

Over the weekend I finished watching the dvd of the first season of Weeds. I loved it. Loved it loved it! However, I do not recommend this show if you are seriously anti-pot or anti-cursing. If my parents watched it, their heads might explode.

Did I tell y'all I had to take a drug test at work a month or so ago? Well I did and I have to say, it made me laugh. I don't even drink any more and you're testing me for drugs?! The only drugs I take are prescribed by my doctor--trust me, I get enough from her that I don't need any others.

Oh! Another good thing about the show is that the actor, Jeffery Dean Morgan, who played Denny on Grey's Anatomy, has some brief bits. He is so very attractive to me. Seriously, I like him so much that I worry about myself just a little bit. I've never crushed over an actor like that.

Last night I caught a re-run of Grey's Anatomy and it was the episode where Izzy first meets Denny. Ya'll, when he starts flirting with her, my heart started to pound. I had to change the channel because I didn't want to think about him.

Okay, enough crazy person ramblings. I gotta get back to work.

Knitting update

Because it's been so hot, I haven't done much knitting. But after frogging the Boss scarf last month (or was it the month before?) I have knit nearly one skein on it. Must get it finished so I can start something more interesting.

Cell phone charm

I'm totally buying this.

Can you tell I'm window shopping* this morning?

Lulu wants this, but I told her that $228 is a bit extravagant. Perhaps I can get a mini tent from the Eddie Bauer display at Target. Don't you just love those mini tents and sleeping bags? Why are things so much cuter when they come in miniature?

*using Windows! hahaha I crack myself up.

In a clutch

I'm in love with this evening bag. There is no where that I go that it would be needed, but it's so pretty!

When people stop being polite

....and start being real.

I live in a condo. Thus, there is a homeowners association. Otherwise known as HOA. Personally, I like to think of it as POA for Pain in my Ass (yes, I know there isn't an o in there). Why? Let me list the reasons:

  1. Tell me that rotten fence is not their problem
  2. Tell me that rotten tree is not their problem
  3. Tell me that rotten back patio overhang is not their problem
  4. Are being sued by another homeowner and are sending out threatening emails regarding possible assessment
  5. The president sends out multiple stupid emails that are urban legends (look under your car! Someone is waiting to slash your Achilles tendon!)
  6. The president sends out threatening email to entire community because one person (and she knows who it is) does not scoop their dogs poop

It's enough to really piss me off. In fact, this morning it did. So I typed up a long, thought out email and sent it out into the ether to the entire community. My therapist would be so proud.

What I really wanted to do was take Lulu for a walk and let her poop on the HOA president's door step. But I didn't. We went for a walk and Lulu wasn't interested in pooping. But she did pee in the HOA lady's lawn. I hope it makes a yellow spot.

A sense of well being

I've been taking a weight loss medication and have lost 12 lbs by taking the med and eating smaller portions. This is exciting. Now if I could just get my lazy ass off the sofa to exercise the fat would really be melting off.

But anyway.

Last night I googled the med because I am still experiencing constant dry mouth. Do you know how annoying that is, specially when it's a zillion degrees outside? As I'm reading up on the drug I see that one of the side affects that they deem troubling and should send you calling your doctor right away is a sense of well being.

What the hell does that mean?!

The look

This is the look that I get from Lulu just about every time I bring out the camera. Imagine the giant sigh of an annoyed teenager and that is what this look is saying. Perhaps Lulu is thinking "get that damn camera out of my face and get me a treat, woman!". Or maybe she's missing Gus. I don't know because she doesn't answer me when I ask.

Blog highlight

Just a quick post to point y'all over to my new favorite blog, design*sponge. It rocks. I've found about a dozen things I could totally blow my paycheck on.

ps....can you tell I'm a child of the 80's? Does anyone still say totally? Like, oh my god, gag me with a spoon! My dad sure wanted to, for sure!

Gluttony

The other night I was cruising the tv guide, looking for things to load up my DVR with and I found a show on the travel channel called World's Best Places to Pig Out.

I like food. Maybe even love it. But the food on this show made me want to hurl. Particularly the Ben & Jerry's Vermonster. The Vermonster is a sundae with 20 scoops of ice cream, a couple of bananas, a brownie, some cookies, and 4 ladles of hot fudge. On the show, several people sat down to each try and eat the entire bucket. It was disgusting.

The next place, rated number 2 on the list, was Eagle's Deli in Massachusetts. Their Reilly burger is a 3 lb burger (6 1/2 lb pattys) with a quarter pound of cheese and it comes with 5 pounds of fries on the side.

No wonder Americans are getting fatter.

And now I really want some ice cream.

This story cracked me up. If Gus and Lulu worked in such a place they would totally do the same thing.

Not enough time

Sometimes, I wish blogs had been around back in 1999 when I was "working" for the state and had nothing to do. Back then I would surf every website I knew, instant message my (now ex-)boyfriend, email friends and then I'd be bored and it would only be 10am!

But now I'm a grown up and have to actually work most of the time I'm at the office and it's severely cutting into my blog reading time. It couldn't possibly be that I'm subscribed to too many blogs, could it?

Random bits

Talladega Nights opens this weekend. Do you want to go see it? If you are in Austin and you do, let me know!

MTV turns 25. My parents didn't let me watch MTV, so I would have to watch it at a friend's house. I still remember watching Duran Duran with my friend Katie and her older sister. The Real World begain airing in the summer of 1992 and I remember watching it at home. By then my parents didn't care all that much (as well the shouldn't, I was in college!) but when the scene with Eric doing the nude modeling came on and my dad walked into the living room, I remember jumping up to change the channel. My folks didn't get a tv with a remote until well into the mid-90s.

Okay, gotta get to work now. No more time for reminiscing.

Seriously, if you want to go see that movie please call me!
