Happy Father's Day

Pie making

His addiction

Dad loves my mom's apple pie so she made one for him today. Kristin makes a mean apple pie as well, so they shared apple peeling techniques. After lunch, dad spent some quality time playing Bejeweled. He loves that game and can spend hours playing it.

It's here!

My new furniture arrived late Saturday afternoon. It looks great. Now I need some art, better lighting, throw pillows and an accent rug.

When being an internet-aholic pays off

From time to time I get phone calls from a marketing research firm. I never qualify and the calls usually end in less than 2 minutes. Tonight, it went on for nearly 20. Why? It was all about the INTERNET! Finally, all the hours I spend online pay off.

Next Friday night I will be participating in a research group for the internet. Because what else are internet addicts going to be doing on a Friday night? It's a hundred bucks. That makes me happy. More yarn for me! Or shoes! Or maybe groceries or gas!

Do you have have one of those days? I feel like I've been having one of those weeks but I can't put my finger on the cause.

It does cheer me up to check out my blog stats. I see ya'll. It might be on purpose or it might be on accident, but thanks for stopping by.

There are several hits from people googling for "possum shit". Who knew that would be such a popular phrase! And there are quite a few Austin folks. If I don't already know you, please leave a comment and say hi. I need more friends!

Bed electronic juju

You know how it seems everything goes wrong at once? Today has not been my day when it comes to electronic devices. At work, my computer kept freezing up when I would try to print. I had to completely re-draw two different things. Then, tonight at Target, the little debit card machine acted up and I had to re-enter my PIN a couple of times. And now, my cable/DVR box is on the fritz. This is not good! The first episode of the second season of The Closer starts in an hour. I must see this show!

If you hear wailing and gnashing ......oh, never mind. The cable box just decided to come on again.

It's hard to ask for help

The past few days have been emotionally trying. Getting the puppy, determining that that was not such a hot idea, and Lulu disappearing for nearly an hour just about did me in. My mom happened to call on Thursday night and through the blubber of tears I said "I need Dad's help".

I'm not one to ask for help. It's not that I think I can do everything, at least not consciously, but it just never occurs to me that I don't have to do it all myself. This is something that's being covered in therapy. Apparently, I have very high, unrealistic expectations for myself and when I don't live up to them anxiety and depression set in. It was a good session.

Anyway, back to my story.

So mom and dad came over this morning and dad busted his ass fixing my fence so that Lulu can not escape anymore. It was not particularly hard work, but it was hot and humid. While he and I did that, mom busied herself sweeping up grass clippings and trimming bushes.

My parents rock.

Ch..ch...changes!

I'm at it again. Making changes to the blog layout. I think I like this one.

While I'm doing this, I'm also watching Meerkat Manor on Animal Planet. Considering that this week has been rather emotional when it comes to animals, should I really be watching this? It's going to make me cry, no doubt about it.

Possum sighting

Lulu is going nuts. There's a possum baby on the fence again. *sigh*

Somebody on Craigslist wants a baby possum. Why?! If they come catch this possum, they can have it!

She needs a name!

She came with the name Susie, but I don't think it suits her.

New baby

New family member

There is a new member of the K family tonight. She's known as Suzie, but that is going to change. She's a 10 month old black and tan dachshund who is very tiny. Most likely under weight and I doubt her nails have ever been trimmed. Her face is so sweet. You will see soon!

Thank you!

A big thank you to my friend,KathyK, for helping me with my blog problem.

Confessions of a former neat freak

messy deskkitchen table cluttered coffee table
I used to be a neat person. Do not confuse this with a clean person. Things were neat and tidy and put away, but there was still dust. Now there is both dust and clutter. I don't know how this happened. I'll never have to go on Clean Sweep , but the clutter does bother me. Apparently not enough to do anything about it or be too embarrassed to put it on the 'net for all to read.

Paint has finally been purchased for my office/craft room/guest room and hopefully I can over come the lazy life enough to paint this week. Once that's done, the computer desk moves from the living and the desk shown above can move out of my bedroom. Then I will organize the room like a soccer mom on speed.

Lulu's hair cut

Originally uploaded by Liz K Austin.
Lulu went to the groomer's today. She was getting pretty shaggy and fluffy, so I told them to shave her. Perhaps I should have actually looked at the blade chart when they said what level of shave they'd give her. So she looks a bit funny now, but she's just as soft. Her coloring is more brown and less red with the short hair and I love that she has the streak of dark down the middle. Isn't it slimming?

The possum saga continues

Just when I hoped it might be over, the young possum showed up tonight. Even though I really should have known better, I let the dogs out to go after it. You see, this afternoon, Gus decided he really wanted to go after a squirrel on the fence. Gus gets air. You saw the picture. You know. Today he was able to jump so high that he was on the fence. Perching like a chicken. More of his body was in the neighbor's yard than mine. And not the neighbor I know. No, the neighbor behind me. And of course I wasn't dressed. Why do the dogs always get up to no good when I'm not dressed?

So I'm yelling like a drunken banshee and finally Gus decides that he will not make me go hoarse and gray and jumps down into my yard.

Anyway, I digress...back to this evening's adventure.

Gus pulls the young possum down from the fence. He and Lulu struggle with it until I get out there and tell them to leave it. Don't think that worked. I had to grab Gus by the scruff of his neck and drag him into the house and then shut the door. Then I go back to get Lulu.

When I get in the house, there is a stench. On lord was there a stench. This smell was not new to me. I smelled it the time Lulu brought the dead possum into the house. It was the smell of possum shit. I look down. Smudges of it on my bare feet. On my hand. Which means it's on one of the dogs.

I have cleaned everything up, included wiping off Gus's mouth and washing my hands in super hot detergent water and my hand still smells nasty.

The kind of nasty that is so bad you have to sniff it again, just to make sure your brain isn't making this up.

And the dogs are not sleeping in my bed tonight.

6.01.2006

I love the dogs...

but they are driving me crazy.

The possum people came this afternoon to switch out the traps so that we could catch the babies. What did I find in the trap when I got home from work at 5:15 today? A squirrel. A freakin' squirrel! That I will have to pay who knows what to have removed from the damn trap.

Just release it yourself, you say.

As if I could! The trap is bolted to the top of my fence so I can't take it down to release the squirrel. You can imagine just how happy Gus and Lulu are to have such a thing in their yard. Lulu barks and spins herself in a circle (I'm pretty sure the Dog Whisperer said that's a bad thing). Gus whines and cries so loud you can't hear yourself think. He sounded like a screaming child. I kid you not. Trying to get to sleep tonight is going to be oh so much fun.

In addition to all this, it has been raining all day. See that mud in the picture below. That's on my very light carpet now.

Also, in the few minutes I spent trying to release the damn squirrel, I was attacked by misquitoes and now I itch all over.

Thank god tomorrow is Friday.

Gotcha!

Captured possum

The weekend

Aunt Wy
This Memorial day weekend has not turned out the way I planned. Early last week, my great aunt Wynona passed away. Aunt Wy was a soft spoken woman. She had to be, since my great uncle was just the exact opposite. Purple was her favorite color and she loved flowers. She and her husband would have been married 64 years in October.

On Friday, I left work early to meet up with my parents and sister so we could drive down to Pearsall. My dad was born in this small town that is south of San Antonio and my grandfather and other relatives are all buried there. Before the graveside service, we stopped at my grandfather's grave. It's the first time I've been back since he died in 1996. My grandfather worked with granite and made his own monument. Even creepier is the fact that it already has my grandmother's name on it. It's just waiting for the year of death.

I drove home on Saturday night with all kinds of good intentions for today. I was going to get up early and head into the office to take care of some projects that needed to be finished on Friday but that I did not get done. Yeah. That didn't happen, although the dogs did let me sleep in. Normally they are up and at 'em by 7am. This morning I got up at 8:30 and I'm pretty sure I could have kept on sleeping and they wouldn't have even noticed.

Eventually, I went in to the office around noon. Now it's 4pm and I'm so ready for a nap before going to dinner with a friend.

Gus at night
Originally uploaded by Liz K Austin.
The damn possum is back again! Tonight, Gus was so quiet when he pulled it down from the fence--he has major vertical leap--that I didn't realize it until I heard him and Lulu rustling about. They were playing tug of war with it.

Tug of war, people! With a live animal that has sharp teeth and claws!

I had to drag Gus inside the house by the scruff of his neck, since he doesn't wear his tags in the house/yard--he has itches and I'd never get any peace. Lulu was a little easier, I just had to kind of shoo her inside.

A few moments later the possum got up and ambled back across the yard, up the fence, and into the viney tree.

A few moments after that, I let the dogs outside because they were going nuts inside. I snapped this photo of Gus as he searched for his frien-enemy, the possum, again.

Weekend Update

Yesterday, my mom came over to have lunch and hang for the day. When she got here, Kristin and her boyfriend were still loading up all her things so she was able to say good-bye. You'd think she hadn't seen us in ages, instead of just the previous weekend. Anyway, after they left, mom got on a serious cleaning kick.

There is a very good reason why this blog is named Lazy Life. I am a poor housekeeper (except for the kitchen, that's clean). I thought once I owned my own place I might change. Ha! So pretty much every surface in the house was covered with a mixture of dust and dog hair. The dish cloth mom grabbed is now black.

So once I was able to get the rag out of her hand we went off for an unsatisfactory lunch at Johnny Carino's. Our waitress was surly and the food was blagh. After that we went to Kohl's, where I scored an iHome clock/radio. It's also plays and charges my iPod, which is totally cool. Then, still being in the shopping mood, we went to browse some furniture.

Look what I bought:

Well, mine is very similar. I got it at Rooms to Go, along with a fabric chair that reclines. Sweeeet! I'll have to fight the dogs for it, I'm sure.

So now I must become un-lazy because the living room needs painting before the furniture is delivered in a few weeks.

Kristin is moving out at the end of this week. The past 8 months have been a lot of fun. It's the first time we've lived together since I left for college 15 years ago. It was also the first time I've had a roommate in 10 years. Of course there were times when we got on each other's nerves. But we've also had a ton of fun. I'll miss having her around.

Things I'll miss when Kristin moves out:

  • The good meals she cooked for us

So lazy I can't even blog properly

Then again, is there really a "proper" way to blog? I have been so lazy lately. My sock? Not done. In fact, frogged completely. Turns out I hated the yarn. New yarn has been procured but I can't get settle down to work on them. The sewing project? I've only cut out the pattern pieces. They're on my desk, buried under clothes that need to be ironed.

I only worked a half day today because I woke up in the middle of the night with a wicked sore throat. Someone told me there is a new strain of strep throat going around. If I get that, I'm going to be so mad. My throat is good friends with strep. You should see my tonsils...they're huge! Last time I had the strep, my doc threatened to remove the tonsils. Dude. I'm 32 years old. Ain't happening.

The school bus

Today Kristin, Gus, Lulu and myself drove to Buda to attend the Wiener Dog Races. We took a shuttle bus, which was actually a school bus, from the Cabela's parking lot. The last time I was on a school bus was probably about 20 ago. This was a fancy bus...seatbelts! And this box, above the drivers head.

Frankly, it scares me a bit to think about why that box would need to be used.

Ramblings

For most of the afternoon and until 8pm, I thought today was Wednesday. So imagine how bummed I was that Lost wasn't on. Thank goodness I hadn't taken the trash out yet. That would surely bring me a fine from my HOA. But since the bag of mowed grass I put out there was very heavy (ow! my back) it can just stay there. Maybe someone will steal it.

The blogs I read are written by some witty, articulate, inteligent women. In my head, I'm all of those things, but getting it from my head through my fingertips is a challenge.

Tonight I watched a preview of a new television show that is currently titled "Brothers and Sisters". It stars Calista Flockhart. It was okay but I don't think I'll be watching it in the fall. Being asked to watch it and give my opinion was pretty cool though, but all the phone calls reminding me to watch were annoying. I wrote it down people! In fact, since I thought it was Wednesday all afternoon I was going to call the LYS to ask for sock advice since I couldn't go to the "Sticks with Chicks" meeting.

Projects in process

I'm a multi-tasker. Just sitting still and watching tv or a movie doesn't work for me. If I'm not flipping through a magzine, I'm knitting, or picking on my fingernails (such a hard habit to break). So of course it should come as no surprise that I have several projects going on at the same time.

Here is a list:
  • Sock: nearly done with the heel flap from hell
  • Boss's scarf: 1/4 done. Not a huge rush seeing as it won't be cold here for another 6 months
  • Sew I Knit?! bag: began cutting out pattern tonight
  • Back yard garden: Ivy has been trimmed and needs to be bagged up

What this should tell you is that while I'm really great at starting things, I'm very bad at finishing things. This is something I'm working on. But now I'm going to go finish cutting out the bag pattern and then I'm casting on new hat!

Home Improvement

Lulu has become very interested in this dead tree. You might not be able to tell from the photo, but when I bought the place last August, the tree had bark. Since then, most of it has come off with a lot of help from Lulu. She can get around, pretty much all the way behind the tree on the left side. It scares me a bit to stick my hand around there...what Ms. Possum is hiding in there and bites me?!...but I think she's about to break into the tree. So yesterday I went to Home Depot and bought this temporary fencing to keep her away from the tree until I get around to having it removed.

As you can see from the second photo, more work needs to be done before it is Lulu-proof. She's a smart cookie. Gus isn't all that interested in trying to get under the fence. Right after I took that photo, Lulu did get under the fence and nearly make her way back around the tree before I was able to haul her out.

Lulu the Possum Killer

Tonight, Lulu brought a gift into the house for a us. A baby possum. A bleeding baby possum. It was larger than the last one, but still young.

I guess her hunting instincts have kicked in. Perhaps there won't be many possums left in my yard much longer.

Not much to say

Isn't this the cutest picture of Gus. You know, despite his shedding, I will miss him when he and Kristin move out.

MRI update: my neck is normal (notice I did not say my head...because they haven't examined it yet. Hah!). The doctor is going to have me do some physical therapy and take a med that is supposed to help with nerve damage and sleeping and hopefully that will clear it all up.

Knitting dreams

Last night I had a dream in which I had moved to California and was attending my first local stitch 'n bitch. Wendy, from Knit and Tonic was there, as well as someone who blogged under the name ShowJen. This ShowJen person was very nice to me and even drove me across L.A. to take me now. Now I need to google and see if there really is a blogger named ShowJen or if I've just been spending too much time on the computer again.

Oh! Yesterday when I was at the imaging center to have my MRI, the guy that took me back asked if I was making a quilt. No, that's not a bag of fabric in my hand. It's a ball of yarn. I'm making a sock.

4.20.2006

On blogging

Okay, so I lay in bed at night and thing of things I want to blog about while I'm trying to fall asleep. I thought that if I actually made a list I might be able to quit thinking about it so much. Right this very second though, I can't remember any of my topics! How's that for a kick in the head?

It's raining here, which means I have a fabulous tension headache. If that weren't bad enough, I have to drive across town in the rain to go see a doctor at the Spine & Rehabilitation about my neck. I've been having neck pain, sometimes severe, since February. It started one Friday morning as I was walking across my room to put on my shoes. Suddenly, there was pain so bad that my neck was stiff and I could not turn my head.

Despite seeing my chiropractor and making ergonomic changes to my work station, my neck continues to hurt. Last week my regular doctor gave me the referral. Apparently I failed some little neurologic test. Her hand writing is a bit tough to read (surprise, surprise), but the note looks like it says "failed connavative tx". I'm assuming tx=test.

Well, off to the doctor I go. I'm taking along my knitting in case I have to wait for a long time.

First World Problem

Just a quick post from work to say that I have a First World Problem. My cousin gave me a $50 gift card to Target for Christmas and despite the fact that I shop at Target at least twice a week, I have yet to find anything to use the gift card on.

What happened to spring?

I think we had maybe 2 or 3 nice weather days and now we're going into the hot days of summer. I'm sorry, but it's just not right for it to be over 100 degrees in the middle of April! The thermostat in my car said it was 106 when I was driving home this afternoon.

Easter Memories

Happy Easter Ya'll!!

This little cartoon cracks me right the hell up. When I was little, and maybe even not so little, my dad would ask if he could have a bite of my chocolate Easter bunny. Being the good daughter that loves her father I let him take a bite. Only he would bite the ears! Mayem would ensue. There would always be yelling and sometimes even tears.

I don't get chocolate bunnies in my Easter baskets anymore, mostly because it's not the best chocolate and I'm always trying to watch my weight (watch it grow right on the scale, but whatever). My dad still does though, but only because he bought a "Mr. Big Ears" at the after Easter candy sale at Wal-Mart a few years ago. Mr. Big Ears spends 364 days a year on the top shelf of my dad's closet, all wrapped up in cardboard and cellophane goodness. On Easter morning, Dad puts the chocolate bunny in front of his plate at the breakfast table and declares how good it is that the bunny has visited once again.

Dad is a bit off if you haven't already guessed.

I have more dad chocolate stories to share, but they'll have to wait for another time.

I was hoping to have a photo to share of my sock. But since I'm really sucking at this sock knitting, I had to frog it and have not started over yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Gas, fresh cut grass and dog shit

That's all I can smell right now because this afternoon I mowed the back yard. For the first time in 20 years or so, I mowed the grass. Last night Kristin and I went to Home Depot so I could buy a lawn mower. It's really belated Christmas gift, as my folks gave me a gift card to HD for Christmas. Funny, I got a belated Christmas present last spring as well (a new tv).

It's a good thing Kristin has more experience mowing the lawn or who knows what might have happened. Thankfully, my yard is tiny so it took maybe 5 minutes to mow. Even after taking a shower, my hands still smell like gas and the scent of dog shit lingers in my nose.

Here's Lulu enjoying not having to walk through a jungle to get to the fence to bark at menacing squirrels.

Bag report

I now have the fabric and pattern for my Sew? I knit! bag. The pattern is from Simplicity and is part of their Sewing for Dummies series. I'm not real jazzed about that because I ain't no dummy, but whatever.

The fabric is from Amy Butler. If it weren't for blogs I probably would have never heard of her or her fabrics and patterns. As you can see from the photo, the exterior of the bag is going to be the pink & green floral and the interior (not an Amy Butler fabric) is the green dotted one.

This other fabric is one I found at the same store and it's by Alexander Julian. I'm not sure what I'll make with it, but it was so cute I just couldn't pass it by. The needle case from the Stitch 'n Bitch book is calling out to me. I have a needle case but it's just a roll of fabric with elastic inside it and the needles tend to fall out.

Oh the whining

Or whinge-ing, as they say in the UK. Who is being the whiny-butt? Lulu. Kristin just left to take Gus for a walk. I'm tired and my feet and neck hurt so I don't feel like going. So I get to listen to Lulu whine and cry and run around the house from the back door to the front door until they get back.

Sometimes, she's such a pill. But how can you not love this cute face.

Poor Gus

Gus is sick. The intestinal sort of sick. So Kristin took him to the emergency vet, but she was worried he'd get sick in her car.

A blanket wrapped around him was her solution.

RIP Baby Possum

This morning the dogs found this baby possum in the yard. I figured it was playing possum so I put it on top of the a/c unit. It was still breathing, although quite heavily. Then I noticed the blood. I don't know if Lulu did that when she first picked it up or if it was already injured. Anyway, this picture was taken this morning, but when I got home the thing was still where I left it and covered in flies. Poor baby. It was kinda cute, although you can't tell from this picture.

Here we have a hat

My first hat! It's done. Yay! Kristin was kind enough to model it for me. Last night, as I was working on it, I thought I was running out of yarn so instead of knitting for 7" to 8" before starting the decrease it was more like 6". So it's a bit short but I still think it looks cute and I'm very happy with it.

Next up is socks. I'm taking a sock class at the North LYS this next Saturday. I'm very exicted.

psst. ...I figured out how to make a link. dur!

Lulu with her grandparents
